From the moment Chris Johnson was released, the team he has been constantly linked to was the New York Jets. Today the Jets and Johnson agreed on a two-year deal that is a perfect match for both parties.
Johnson brings the speed the Jets sorely lack on offense and New York gives the running back another chance to prove that he’s still one of the best in the league. The Jets had two decent options before Johnson arrived but Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory don’t bring the same type of home run ability that CJ2K has.
In his six seasons with the Tennessee Titans, Johnson rushed for over 1,000 yards each year and routinely made big plays. The Jets have been a very good rushing team under Rex Ryan but they’ve never had a back with Johnson’s type of game breaking speed. Pairing Johnson with Geno Smith or Michael Vick turns a team that had very little speed in the backfield into a more dangerous offense.
At 28-years old Johnson has shown signs of decline over the past few seasons but he is still a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He had four touchdowns of 25 yards or longer in 2013 and even though Johnson’s yards per carry was down last year, his best statistics came during the final two months of the season.
The fit in New York is also a good one because Johnson has thrived when he’s had a short yardage runner to split the tough carries. In Tennessee he was successful with LenDale White for two seasons and now he’ll have a combination of Ivory and Powell to help out in goal line situations.
Chris Johnson has found a new home with the New York Jets and it couldn’t have worked out any better for the player, or the team.
